On8December1942,radarintheUnitedStatespickedupaplanecomingfromthedirectionofJapan.Twopilotsweresenttointerceptit.Whentheyapproachedthemysteriousplane,theywereshockedtofindabullet-riddledAmericanfighterwithlandinggearblownaway.Theblood-stainedpilot,slumpedoverthecontrols,turnedhisheadintheirdirection,smiled,andwavedfeebly.Momentslatertheplaneplummetedtowardstheearth.
Littleremainedtoidentifythepilot,butsomesortofdiarywasfound.Fromthisdiary,itwasdeducedthattheplanehadcomefromthePhilippines.Probably,thepilotwasoneoftheAmericansoldierswhorefusedtosurrenderwhentheJapaneseinvadedthePhilippinesinDecember1941,andcannibalisingpartsfromdownedplanes,theyreadiedthefighterforonefinalflight.
一九四二年十二月八日，美國雷達偵察到有飛機從日本方向飛來。兩名飛行員奉命前去攔截，逼近那神秘飛機時，訝然發覺是一架美國戰鬥機，機身彈孔纍纍，連起落架都被轟掉，機上飛行員渾身血污，倒在駕駛儀器板上，轉頭望向他們，微微一笑，軟弱的揮揮手，然後飛機就朝地面直摔下去。
憑墜機現場所得，不足以辨認那飛行員的身分。不過，飛機上找到類似日記的文件，從中可推斷飛機來自菲律賓。也許，那飛行員是一九四一年十二月日軍攻佔菲律賓時不肯投降的美軍之一。那些美軍從被擊落的飛機上拆取零件，裝在這戰鬥機上，作最後一次飛行。
