Theplantheyadoptedinvolvedoutfittingadeadmanwithauniform,andpapersplacedinhispocketsidentifiedhimasMajorWilliamMartin.ABritishsubmarinethenputhimintotheseanearHuelva,Spain.AbriefcasechainedtohiswristcontainedfakelettershintingthattheAlliedattackwouldbeagainstSardiniaandGreece.Whenthebodywasfound,thepaperswerepassedtotheGermanHighCommand.Theruseworked.WhentheAlliesinvadedSicily,theGermansweresoconvincedoftheAllies'intentiontotakeSardiniaandGreecethattheylettwoweeksgobybeforerealisingthattheinvasionwasnotadiversion.TheAlliescompletelyconqueredSicilyinamonth.

蒙騙的辦法，是給一個死人穿上軍服，在他口袋裏放的身分證明文件稱他為「威廉．馬丁少校」，然後一艘英國潛艇把他拋入西班牙韋爾瓦省會附近海裏。鎖在他手腕上的公事包內有些假信件，暗示盟軍要進侵薩丁尼亞和希臘。「馬丁少校」的屍體被發現後，那些文件就送到德軍最高司令部。計劃十分成功。盟軍出征西西里島時，德軍仍然深信他們要取的其實是薩丁尼亞和希臘，過了兩個星期才明白盟軍原來不是聲東擊西。盟軍花了一個月就完全征服西西里。
