Please和he之前加不加逗點都可以。從前，英文句子多逗點，幾乎每一停頓處都會加上，但第二次世界大戰後，逗點漸漸變成可省則省。英語學者弗萊施（RudolfFlesch）在TheABCofStyle裏列舉了同一句子的今昔標點法：Stillpenniless,GauguineventuallywenttoArles,inthesouthofFrance,tolivewithhisfriend,VincentvanGogh/Stillpenniless,GauguineventuallywenttoArlesinthesouthofFrancetolivewithhisfriendVincentvanGogh（高更依舊囊空如洗，最後去了法國南部亞耳市，和朋友文生特．梵谷同住）。《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》please條下有Twocoffees,please（請來兩客咖啡）、Quietplease（請肅靜）兩句，是please之前逗點可有可無例證。
However、therefore、nevertheless、perhaps、ofcourse、forexample、ontheotherhand等常用詞語，從前習慣用逗點分隔，現在則不必，例如Iamofcourseinterested不必寫作Iam,ofcourse,interested（我當然感到興趣）。不過，加逗點有時可免誤會，例如Iamgoing,perhaps,withher是「我和她也許會去」，Iamgoing,perhapswithher是「我也許會和她去」，Iamgoingperhapswithher則模棱兩可。《紐約人》週刊（NewYorker）編輯有一次把Isawherbutamoment（我看見她不過一會兒）改為Isawher,butamoment，以免讀者把herbut連起來讀，聯想到Isawherbuttamoment（我看了她臀部一會兒）。
