Onthatday,O'HareandhiswingmanDuffDufilhowereintheairwhentheyspottedeightJapanesebomberspreparingtoattacktheiraircraftcarrierLexington.Theyracedtoconfrontthem,butDufilho'sgunswerejammedandwouldnotfire.Withnotamomenttolose,O'Haredivedintothemidstoftheenemy,andinanimpressivedisplayofmarksmanshipshotdownsixofthebomberssingle-handedly,savingtheshipandthelivesofthousandsaboard.Withhisammunitionexpended,hereturnedtotheLexington,andwasfiredonaccidentallybutwithnoeffectbyananti-aircraftgunneronthecarrier.Helatertoldthegunnercalmly,"Son,ifyoudon'tstopshootingatmewhenI'vegotmywheelsdown,I'mgoingtohavetoreportyoutothegunneryofficer."
布奇．奧黑爾是海軍飛行員，一九四二年二月二十日成為美國海軍第一位空中神射手。
那一天，奧黑爾和他的僚機飛行員達夫．達菲豪在空中，看見八架日本轟炸機準備攻擊他們的航空母艦列克星敦號，馬上趕去迎敵，但達菲豪發覺機槍堵塞，無法開火。奧黑爾不敢怠慢，衝進日本轟炸機之中，獨力打下六架，槍法如神，救了母艦以及艦上數以千計的人，到彈藥用盡，才飛回列克星敦號，船上一個高射砲手誤向他開火，沒有打中。奧黑爾後來平靜的跟那砲手說：「老弟，要是我放下飛機輪後你還向我射擊，我就得向槍砲軍官檢舉你了。」
