ButchO'Hare,whowasawardedtheMedalofHonourbyUSPresidentRooseveltin1942forintrepidityinaerialcombatagainsttheJapanese,hadafatherwhowouldriskhislifeforhim.
Hisfather,alawyernamedEddieO'Hare,gotinvolvedwithAlCapone,headofaChicagocrimesyndicate,inthe1920s,andbecauseofthismadetonsofmoney.But,toensurethathissongotintotheNavalAcademyandtosethimagoodexample,EddieturnedagainstCapone.HeprovidedincriminatingevidenceagainstCapone,asaresultofwhichprosecutorswereabletohaveCaponeconvictedfortaxevasionandsenttoprisonin1931.
In1932,ButchgraduatedfromtheWesternMilitaryAcademy,andinthefollowingyearwentontotheNavalAcademy.In1939,hisfatherwasshot,aweekbeforeCaponewasreleasedfromincarceration.
布奇．奧黑爾因與日軍空戰表現英勇，一九四二年獲美國羅斯福總統頒授榮譽勳章。這位勳章得主，有一個不惜為兒子賭命的父親。
他父親埃廸．奧黑爾是律師，一九二○年代和芝加哥犯罪集團主腦阿爾．卡彭拉上關係，賺了很多錢。但為求十多歲的兒子得進海軍學院，並為兒子樹立榜樣，埃廸背叛卡彭。他提供卡彭的罪證給檢察官，卡彭因此被判犯逃稅罪，一九三一年入獄。
一九三二年，布奇畢業於西部軍事學院，次年進入海軍學院。一九三九年，他父親遭槍殺，時間就在卡彭出獄前一個星期。
