AfreedslaveintheFrenchcolonyofStDominique,nowHaiti,ToussaintL'Ouverturejoinedablackrebellionin1791,andby1797waseffectiverulerofthecolony.In1802,hesignedatreatywiththeFrench,andagreedtoretirefrompubliclife.However,atNapoleon'sordershewastreacherouslyseizedandtakentoaprisonintheFrenchAlps,wherehediedofpneumoniain1803.
Yearslater,inexileatStHelena,whenaskedabouthisdishonourabletreatmentofToussaintL'Ouverture,Napoleonremarked,"WhatcouldthedeathofonewretchedNegromeantome?"

圖森路維杜爾長於法國殖民地聖多米尼克，即今天的海地。他獲解除了奴隸身分，一七九一年參與黑人起義，到了一七九七年，實際上成為這個殖民地的統治者。一八○二年，他和法國人簽署條約，答應退出公共事務，但拿破崙命令手下使詐，把他拘捕，送到法國阿爾卑斯山上一個監獄。一八○三年，圖森路維杜爾患上肺炎，死在獄中。
多年後，拿破崙放逐聖赫勒拿島，有人問及他對付圖森路維杜爾的不光榮手段，他說：「一個討厭的黑鬼死去，我怎會放在心上？」
