In1780,ArnoldsoughtandobtainedcommandofthestrategicallyimportantfortatWestPoint.ThroughBritishmajorJohnAndre,hiswife'sformersuitor,heofferedtohandthefortovertotheBritishfor£20300.HisplanswerethwartedwhenAndrewascapturedbytheAmericanswiththedocumentsthatincriminatedArnoldinhissock.Andrewashangedasaspy,whileArnoldescapedtoaBritishship,narrowlyavoidingcapturebyGeorgeWashington'sforces.
