這個國家前所未見的、繞着學校和教堂排隊的人龍，和那些輪候三、四小時、當中很多首次這樣做的人民，已道出了答案。因為他們相信今次一定不同，他們的聲音可以這樣不同。
這個答案是由少年和老年；富者與窮人；民主黨人與共和黨人；黑人、白人、拉丁人、亞洲人、美國土著；同性戀者、異性戀者；傷殘人士和健全的美國人說出來，他們向世界發出一個訊息，我們從來不是紅色州分（共和黨）與藍色州分（民主黨）的合體，我們是，永遠都是，美利堅合眾國。
這個答案，讓那些被很多人長期以來譏笑、懼怕、懷疑我們能夠做些甚麼的人，伸手到歷史的弧線上，再次把它扭向明天更好的希望所在。

前路將會漫長陡峭，我們未必能一年、任內一屆即能達到，但我對美國從未像今晚般充滿希望。我答應你們，我們作為一個民族，必將達到。
前面會有挫折與失誤，會有很多人未必同意我身為總統所作出的每個決定與政策，我也知道政府不可能解決每個問題。但我將永遠誠實的向你們交代我們面對的挑戰，我會聆聽你們，尤其是當我們分歧之時。更重要的是，我會徵求你們加入，以美國221年來唯一的方式，一磚一瓦、一點一滴，一起重建這個國家。
21個月前的嚴冬所開始的東西，一定不會在這個秋夜終結。這次勝利本身，並非我們追求的改變，它只是給予我們改變的一個機會。如果我們重返舊路，如果沒有你們，改變就不會發生。
