JohnRabe,aNaziwhoseNankingSafetyZoneshelteredsome200,000ChineseduringtheNankingMassacre,returnedtoGermanyin1938.HeshowedfilmsandphotographsofJapaneseatrocitiesinlecturepresentationsinBerlin,andhesenttheinformationtoHitler,askinghimtousehisinfluencetopersuadetheJapanesetostopanymoreviolenceofthissort.Instead,RabewasarrestedbytheGestapo.Becauseoftheinterventionofhisemployer,Siemens,hewasreleased,butwasforbiddentolectureorwriteonthesubjectanymore.
AfterWorldWarII,RabewasdenouncedforhisNaziPartymembership.InJune1946,hewasexoneratedofanywrongdoing,butthetrialdepletedhimofhishealthandsavings,andthoughhewaspartlysupportedbythefoodandmoneysentbytheChinesegovernment,hesuccumbedtomalnutrition.Hediedofastrokeinearly1950.
南京大屠殺期間，納粹黨員約翰．拉伯設立的南京安全區庇護了約二十萬中國人。他一九三八年回到德國，在柏林以影片、照片等四處講述日軍暴行，並把資料寄給希特勒，請他運用影響力，勸日本人停止這樣的殘暴行為。不料蓋世太保反而把拉伯拘捕。拉伯幸得僱主西門子公司援手，最後獲釋，但被禁止再以南京大屠殺事件為題演講或寫作。
第二次世界大戰後，拉伯由於是納粹黨員，遭受控告，雖然一九四六年六月獲判無罪，但審訊摧毀了他的健康，也耗盡了他的儲蓄，中國政府寄給他的食物、金錢，只可稍稍紓困。他患上營養不良，一九五○年初中風辭世。
