一九三七年，日本蹂躪南京，約有三十萬中國平民被屠殺，二萬到八萬中國婦女被強姦。這場大劫之中出現了一位英雄。西門子僱員約翰．拉伯當時是德國納粹黨人在南京的領袖。他開放自己的房子，收容了約六百五十名難民；並率領二十多位外國人，成立一個安全區，庇護了約二十萬中國百姓，使他們得免殺戮。拉伯親自在安全區巡邏，把日本士兵從被姦婦女身上拖起來，赤手空拳把他們趕走。他賴以防身的，只是臂章展示的納粹黨徽。
拉伯在日記裏說：「日本人不想和德國人衝突。通常我只須高喊『德意志』和『希特勒』，他們就會變得有禮。」
