東亞銀行最近刊登廣告說：Thankyouallforyourloyalsupportandcontinuedconfidenceinourbank（感謝各位忠實支持並繼續信任本行）。這一句為什麼不說continuoussupport而說continuedsupport？
文法上，將continued改為continuous是可以的，但二字意思有點不同：continuous強調「毫無間斷」的意思，continued則強調「繼續的」。例如「希望和貴公司繼續合作」，英文是Ilookforwardtoyourcontinuedcooperation；「兩家公司過去十五年合作無間」，英文是Therehasbeencontinuouscooperationbetweenthetwocompaniesoverthepastfifteenyears。這兩句的continued和continuous假如掉換，就沒有那麼好。
Themostbasicexpectationwecanhaveofourgovernmentisthatitensuresthatthefoodwebuyissafe（我們對政府最基本的要求，是保障我們買到安全的食物）。這一句ofourgovernment三字為什麼可放在have之後？意思是什麼？
首先要說的，是wecanhave等於which/thatwecanhave，是關係子句（relativeclause），文法上可以刪去。Expect/expectation是「期望」，其後可用of帶出對什麼人或事物有期望，例如：（1）Whatcanyouexpectofher?（=Whatexpectationscanyouhaveofher?你對她能有什麼期望？）（2）Thatisourmostbasicexpectationofourgovernment（那是我們對政府的最基本要求）。讀者說的那一句，假如沒有ofourgovernment三字，那「最基本的要求」就不知是對誰而言。
