Wymanwasacrackshotfromyearsofhuntingandskirmishingexperience.TheBritishcametodreadthesightofthistall,gauntmanwithlonggreylocksastimeandagainhewouldrideintorangeofthevanguard,jumpoffthehorse,layhislongrifleacrossthesaddleandsqueezeoffadeliberateshotattheadvancingregulars.Hekeptdroppingmenwithhisattacks,remountingandridingofftoanewpositiontodoitagain.Hebecameagrimmessengerofmortality,mountedondeath'spalehorse.
一七七五年四月十九日是赫齊卡亞．懷曼五十五歲生日，也是美國獨立戰爭爆發的日子。他一面準備作戰，一面被妻子責備，說年紀這麼大還打什麼仗。但他給馬裝上鞍子，拍馬而去。
懷曼有多年打獵和零星戰鬥經驗，練得槍法如神，常常策馬走向英軍前鋒，到了射程之內，就跳下馬，把長步槍擱在鞍上，瞄準這些正規軍射擊。英軍漸漸怕了這名個子瘦長、一頭灰白長髮的男人。他不斷出擊，把英兵一個接一個射殺，然後翻身上馬而去，走到新的襲擊位置，又重施故技，仿佛是死神的恐怖使者，騎着慘白色死亡之馬。
