一七七五年四月十九日，英軍經過列克里敦、康科德兩場戰役，返回波士頓，途中被撒母耳．惠特莫爾看見了。惠特莫爾已經八十歲，而且跛腳，但還是馬上拿起毛瑟槍，裝上子彈，躲在附近石牆後，開槍殺了一個英兵，然後拔出決鬥用手槍，再殺了兩個，見英兵已經走到跟前，來不及再上子彈，就拔劍相迎，被開槍打中面孔，又被刺刀插了十三下。英兵以為他死了，不顧而去。
英兵去後，村民發覺惠特莫爾還活着，抬他去看醫生。醫生認為他活不成了，但他再活了十八年，看到英國戰敗。
