TheJeffersonBibleisstrictlyspeakingthethirdUSpresident'sredactionofthefourgospels.WhileJeffersonvaluedtheethicalteachingsofJesus,hepurgedthegospelsofallsupernaturalwords,actionsandevents.TheJesusofthisbookwasnotGod,butsimplyamanwhoperformsnomiracles,doesnotproclaimhimselftheSonofGod,anddoesnotrisetoheavenafterdyingonthecross.Jeffersonthoughtallthesethingshadbeenaddedthroughthe"stupidity"or"roguery"ofJesus'disciples.
ButJeffersonneverallowedhisBibletobepublishedduringhislifetime.HisBiblewasnotpublisheduntilmanyyearsafterhisdeath.
一九○四年開始，美國參議院會在每名新任議員宣誓就職時，給他們一本《傑克遜聖經》。
嚴格而言，《傑克遜聖經》是四福音的修訂版，修訂者是美國第三任總統傑克遜。他推崇耶穌的德教，但把四福音所述神奇言行、事迹一律刪去。書中的耶穌不是上帝，而只是個凡人，沒有神迹，沒有自稱是上帝之子，死在十字架上之後也沒有升天。傑克遜認為，那一切都是耶穌門徒加上去的，或因「愚蠢」，或因「欺詐」。
但傑克遜生前始終不肯出版這本《聖經》。他的《聖經》要到他死後多年才付梓。
