Fleeingfromthecarnageanddestructiononthemainland,someRomancitizenstooktotheswamps,findingsanctuaryinadesolategroupofmorethan100islandsintheVenetianLagoon.Overthecenturies,theytransformedtheinhospitablesurroundingsintoacentreofcommerceandtourism.
阿提拉於公元四三三年到四五三年統治匈奴帝國，羅馬人稱他為「上帝之鞭」，在位期間，是東西羅馬帝國的大敵。
公元四五二年，阿提拉入侵義大利，無數城市遭劫掠、焚毀。不過，匈奴人無意中還做了一件事：協助建立威尼斯市。
當時有些羅馬市民為了躲避屠殺、毀滅，從義大利大陸逃到沼澤區，在威尼斯環礁湖的百多個荒島上安身，經過多個世紀經營，把這不宜居住的地方變成商業及旅遊中心。
