Theclimaxofthebattlefellon15September.Morethan400GermanbombersattackedLondon.RAFfighterpilotsbattledbravelytoprotectthecity.SergeantRayHolmesshotdownonebomberandthensawanotherGermanplaneheadingstraighttowardsBuckinghamPalace,theresidenceoftheRoyalfamily.Uponfiring,hediscoveredhismachinegunsfailed.HopingthathisHurricanefightercouldwithstandtheimpact,heflewtheplanedirectlyintotheGermanbomber,cuttingoffitstailandsendingithurtlingtotheground.Buthisownplanewasbadlydamagedandwasfallingintoadive.Heparachutedtosafety.
不列顛戰役一九四○年七月十日在英國領空展開，作戰雙方是英國皇家空軍和納粹德國空軍，英國空軍軍力比來犯者少三分之二。
戰役最激烈的一天是九月十五日，四百多架德國轟炸機襲擊倫敦，英國戰鬥機飛行員奮勇抗敵護城。雷．霍姆茲中士擊落了一架德國轟炸機，又看見另一架正朝着王室所居的白金漢宮急飛。他開槍射擊，卻發覺機槍失靈，就駕機撞過去，希望自己的旋風戰鬥機可以抵受這撞擊之力。那德國轟炸機尾部被撞斷，整架飛機掉到地上。霍姆茲自己的飛機也嚴重損毀，向下俯衝。他棄機跳傘，安全着陸。
