馬其頓國王安提戈努斯有個士兵不怕冒險犯難，但健康很差。安提戈努斯問他為什麼總是臉色蒼白，他直言患隱疾。安提戈努斯起了憐惜之心，下令御醫盡力給那人治病。那人因此康復，但康復後見危不再挺身，作戰不再拚命。
安提戈努斯對這轉變感到奇怪，並斥責那人。那人也不隱瞞，解釋說：「陛下，是你使我膽子小起來。我因病，視生命如鴻毛，你卻把我治好了。」
