斯巴達國王阿格西勞斯征波斯，聲言會進犯里底亞。里底亞、卡里亞兩地波斯總督蒂施亞弗內斯上過他一次當，誤把這明白的聲言當做詭計，以為阿格西勞斯應是要取卡里亞，就率軍到卡里亞迎敵。
但蒂施亞弗內斯一如所言，進侵里底亞。蒂施亞弗內斯發覺後，連忙率騎兵兼程追趕，趕上在鄉間搶掠的散兵，一例誅殺。阿格西勞斯知道波斯的騎兵一定先步兵到達，而他自己則騎兵步兵都在一起，於是馬上交戰，把敵軍殺得落花流水，窮追不捨，奪了他們營帳，不少波斯將士死在希臘軍劍下。
