AtthebattleofHeraclea;KingPyrrhuskilledseveralofthebestRomanwarriorsinsinglecombat.RealisingthatifhewererecognisedhewouldbeindangerfromotherRomansoldiers,hechangedarmourwithoneofhismen.ThischangeofarmourprobablysavedPyrrhus'life,butitnearlylosthimthebattle.Themanwearingthearmourwaskilled,andtheRomansshowedPyrrhus'distinctivehelmetallaroundthebattlefield.Onseeingit,theRomansshoutedforjoy,andPyrrhus'mengroanedwithterroranddiscouragement.Finally,Pyrrhushadtobarehisheadandrideamongthem,shoutingthathewasstillalive.
Pyrrhus'elephantsweresofrighteningtotheRomanhorsesthattheircavalryretreatedindisorder.WhenPyrrhussawthis,hecommandedhiscavalrytocharge,andthatwonhimthebattle.
皮拉斯王在赫拉克利亞之役裏，和幾個最出色的羅馬將士一對一戰鬥，格殺對手：他明白，假如自己被人認出，別的羅馬將士都會向他下手，於是和手下更換盔甲。這一換也許救了他性命，卻幾乎令他打敗仗。羅馬軍殺了穿他盔甲的那個人，拿着皮拉斯與別不同的頭盔，在戰場四處招搖，羅馬將士見了，無不歡呼。皮拉斯的手下則驚歎氣奪。最後，皮拉斯不得不脫去頭盔，策馬在軍中來去，大聲疾呼，說自己仍然在世。
皮拉斯軍中的大象，令羅馬軍的馬匹非常驚恐，羅馬騎兵紛紛潰退。皮拉斯見了，就下令麾下騎兵進攻，終於贏了這場戰爭。
