日前貴欄有例句說：Theyobviouslyhadnointentiontohonourtheirpromise（他們明顯無意履行諾言）一語，文法有沒有錯？第四版《朗文當代高級辭典》注明那句式是不對的。
查朗文詞典intention條，果然有以下文法：「無意做某事」應說havenointentionofdoingsomething，不要說havenointentiontodosomething（原文是：Donotsay"havenointentiontodosomething"....Say"havenointentionofdoingsomething"）。究竟havenointention之後是不是一定要用「of+ing動詞」，不得用「to+原形動詞（infinitive）」？
《研究社新英和活用大辭典》（Kenkyusha'sNewDictionaryofEnglishCollocations）intention條下有以下例句：inspectgoodsinastorewithnointentiontobuy（看商店裏的貨品，但無意購買）。大作家狄更斯小說《老古董商店》（TheOldCuriosityShop）第三十三回也有以下一句：TothiscomplimentMissSallyreplied,thatshehadarelishforthisamusement,andhadnointentiontoforegoitsgratification（莎莉小姐對這恭維的回答是：她喜歡這種娛樂，無意放棄這娛樂帶來的滿足感）。當然，這兩句改為withnointentionofbuying以及hadnointentionofforegoingitsgratification也可以，但「to+原形動詞」的句式並沒有錯，在英文報刊以至文學作品裏都經常可以看到。
最後要說的，是nointention之後用「of+ing動詞」比「to+原形動詞」通行，這也許就是朗文辭典編者教人用of而不用to的原因，只是字典畢竟不是文法書，限於篇幅，語焉不詳。
