FriedrichPaulus,commanderoftheGermanSixthArmy,askedforpermissiontosurrendertosavethelifeofhistroops,butHitlerrefused,andinsteadpromotedhimtotherankoffieldmarshal.NoGermanofficerofthisrankhadeversurrendered,andtheimplicationwasclear.IfPaulussurrendered,hewouldshamehimself.HitlerbelievedPauluswouldeitherfighttothelastmanorcommitsuicide.Choosingtolive,Paulussurrendered,saying,"IhavenointentionofshootingmyselfforthatBavariancorporal."
斯大林格勒戰役是人類歷史上最大戰役之一，激戰一百九十九天，其間德軍先後佔領市內百分之九十土地，但蘇聯軍隊死戰，一九四二年十一月更大舉反攻，德軍終於慘敗。
德國第六軍司令弗里德里希．保羅斯請希特勒容許他投降，以免部隊犧牲，但希特勒不許，反而擢升他為陸軍元帥，用意很明顯：這個級別的德國軍官，是從來沒有投降的。保羅斯假如請降，將顏面無存。希特勒以為保羅斯會戰至一兵一卒或自殺，但保羅斯寧願活下去，投降蘇聯，並說：「我不會為巴伐利亞那個陸軍下士開槍自殺。」
