Ononememorabledayin1906,forexample,theczardescribedtheweather,hiswalk,hisdinner,andhiseveningreading.Indeed,hisentrycontainedonlyonesentencewhichdidnotdirectlyconcernhispersonalleisure:"Signedadecreedissolvingtheduma."ThedayranksamongthemostsignificantinRussianhistory:amajorityofoppositioncandidateshadwonelectiontotheduma.ThoughmorethanadecadewouldpassbeforetheRussianRevolutionandtheczar'sexecution,thewheelsoffatehadbeguntoturn.
俄國末代沙皇尼古拉二世每天都老老實實寫日記，但記述的通常只是寫意的散步、社交聚會等。
例如一九○六年有一天極不尋常，這位沙皇記述的卻是天氣、散步、晚餐、夜讀等生活細節，整篇日記只有一句和私人休閑活動沒有直接關係：「簽署詔令解散國會。」那一天是俄國歷史上最重要日子之一：反對派候選人大部分獲選成為國會議員。雖然俄國革命、尼古拉二世遭處決等，是十餘年後才發生的事，但命運之輪已經開始轉動。
【附注】「國會」叫法各國或有不同：英國叫parliament，美國叫congress，丹麥、瑞典、日本等叫diet，俄國沙皇時代則叫duma。留意「沙皇」除了拼作czar，也可拼作tsar。
