SwingembarkedforEngland,wherehewasimmediatelyreceivedbyGrey.UponhearingtheproposalofanindemnityGreybegan"amagnificenttirade"whichwassomagnificentthatSwingforgottosayhehadtheimpressionthattheindemnitymightnotbeinsistedupon.Thislapseofmemorymighthavechangedthecourseofhistory.
一九一四年第一次世界大戰爆發時，《芝加哥日報》駐柏林記者雷蒙德．斯溫進見德國首相貝特曼赫爾維希。貝特曼赫爾維希告訴他說，德國無意吞併比利時或任何其他地方，並說斯溫可以把這話轉告英國外交大臣愛德華．格雷。不過，他說同盟國答應議和，就須賠款。
斯溫出發去英國，馬上獲格雷接見。格雷一聽到要賠款，就來「一頓精彩的咒罵」，精彩得令斯溫忘了說，他所得的印象是賠款一事，德國未必堅持。這偶然的遺忘，也許改變了歷史。
