In1258,theAbbasiddynastywasinvadedbytheMongolsunderHulaguKhan,thegrandsonofGenghisKhan.ThecaliphhadbeendeludedbypromisesfromhisvizierthattheMongolscouldbedrivenoffbythewomenofBaghdadthrowingstonesatthem,anddidnotraiseanarmytodefendthecityfromthelargestMongolarmyeverassembled.InsteadhesentweakthreatstoHulagu,warningtheMongolsthattheyfacedthewrathofGodiftheyattackedBaghdad.
Hulagu'sforcesbesiegedthecity,andthecaliphhadtosurrender,leadingtoaweek-longmassacrebytheMongols,regardedasoneofthemostdevastatingeventsinthehistoryofIslam.
一二五八年，成吉思汗的孫子旭烈兀可汗率領蒙古軍隊進侵阿拔斯王朝。阿拔斯王誤聽大臣的話，以為巴格達城中婦女向蒙古人擲石頭，就可以把他們擊退，並沒有徵募軍隊守城，對抗這支歷來最龐大的蒙古雄師，只是向旭烈兀發出軟弱的恐嚇，說攻擊巴格達將受天譴。
旭烈兀揮軍攻城，阿拔斯王唯有投降。蒙古人展開一個星期屠殺，是回教歷來最慘痛的劫難之一。
【附注】阿拔斯王朝公元七五○年開始統治阿拉伯回教世界，以巴格達為首都，八世紀末至九世紀初勢力極盛。Caliph是從前回教最高統治者的稱號。旭烈兀那場屠殺，死者或說有二十萬，或說達八十萬，或說超過百萬。Vizier指古時回教國家的大臣。
