GreekphilosopherEmpedocles（ca490-430BC）,notedforhisknowledgeofnature,seemsduringhislifetimetohavepretendedtomiraculouspowers,includingthedestructionofevil,thecuringofoldage,andthecontrollingofwindandrain.Consequently,hebecamethesubjectofmuchridiculeafterhisdeath.
Alegendhasitthathismegalomanialedhimtothrowhimselfintoanactivevolcano,MountEtnainSicily,sothathiscompletedisappearancewouldleadotherstobelievethathehadachievedapotheosis.However,thevolcanorevealedhisdeceitbyejectingoneofhisbronzesandals.Anotherlegendhasitthathethrewhimselfinthevolcanotoprovetohisdisciplesthathewasimmortal;hebelievedhewouldcomebackasagodamongmanafterbeingdevouredbythefire.
希臘哲學家恩培多克勒生於公元前約四九○年，卒於四三○年，以通曉自然著名，生前似乎自稱有神術，例如能毀滅邪惡、醫治衰老、號令風雨。因此，他死後，被不少人取笑。
根據傳說，恩培多克勒的自大狂使他跳進西西里島埃特納活火山，希望徹底消失人間，令別人相信他羽化登仙。不過，火山把他的一隻青銅涼鞋噴出，揭穿了他欺世的圖謀。另一個傳說則是，他跳進火山，希望向信徒證明自己是神人。他以為焚身之後，會以神的身分回到人間。
