法國將領拉法埃脫曾參與美國獨立戰爭以及法國大革命。法國大革命最熾烈時，他有一天乘馬車在街上走，被一群仰慕者攔着，解下馬匹，合力把馬車拖到目的地。
幾個星期之後，有人問拉法埃脫說，仰幕者愛戴的表現令不令他高興。他回答：「高興得很，高興得很，但有一件事使我有點惶惑。」他略一沉吟，又說：「我的馬從此不見了。」
值得一提的是，拿破崙戰爭期間，法國士兵抱怨說，他們經常捱餓，但拿破崙的愛駒尼科爾總有東西吃。
【附注】拉法埃脫本是法國貴族，卻放棄貴族身分，給予手下奴隸自由。美國獨立戰爭爆發後，他捐鉅款支持，並親率軍隊抗英，曾呼籲華盛頓解放奴隸，只是華盛頓沒有照辦。
