一七七九年九月二十三日，美國獨立戰爭英雄約翰．保羅．瓊斯駕着破舊的勒博諾姆理查號，在英格蘭東北弗蘭伯勒角近海，打敗了皇家軍艦塞拉皮斯號護送的一隊英國商船。
塞拉皮斯號指揮官理查．皮爾遜回到英格蘭，雖然因敗北受到一些批評，但他臨陣英勇，贏得熱烈推許，把批評的聲音都淹沒了。
