DuringtheAmericanCivilWarConfederateGeneralStonewallJackson,inabrilliantmilitarymanoeuvre,outflankedavastlysuperiorforceofUniontroopsatChancellorsville,Virginia.On2May1863,manyoftheFederalswerecapturedwithoutashotfired,andtherestweredrivenintoafullrout.DarknessendedJackson'sassault.
AsJacksonwasreturningtocamp,hisownmen,notrecognisinghiminthedark,shotandwoundedhimsobadlythathisleftarmhadtobeamputated,andon10Mayhediedofcomplicationsofpneumonia.Ashelaydying,ConfederatearmycommanderRobertLeesentamessagetohimthroughChaplainLacy,saying,"GiveGeneralJacksonmyaffectionateregards,andsaytohim:Hehaslosthisleftarm,butImyright."
美國內戰期間，南軍將領石壁．傑克遜兵行妙着，在維吉尼亞州錢瑟勒斯維爾鎮，包抄北軍一支強大得多的軍隊。一八六三年五月二日，北軍士兵不少未發一槍，已被俘虜，其餘的都落荒而逃。傑克遜到天黑才收兵。
傑克遜回營時，手下在黑暗中沒認出是他，開槍把他打傷，左手須切除。五月十日，傑克遜死於肺炎併發症。他臨終時，南軍司令羅勃特．李託隨軍牧師萊西向他致意：「代我問候傑克遜將軍。告訴他：他失了左臂，我失了右臂。」
〔附注〕傑克遜原名ThomasJonathanJackson，因在敵軍猛攻之下仍能堅守陣地，贏得Stonewall的綽號。南朝檀道濟自許為國家「萬里長城」，意思相似。
