Louisgratefullyaccepted."Yoursacrificeisthegreater,"heobserved,"foryouarejeopardisingyourownlifewhileyoucannotpossiblysavemine."
Sureenough,LouiswasguillotinedinJanuary1793.MalesherbeswasarrestedinDecember,alongwithhisdaughter,hisson-in-lawandhisgrandchildren,andinApril1794hewasguillotined,afterhavingseenallwhomhelovedexecutedbeforehiseyesfortheirrelationshiptohim.
法國大革命爆發後不久，國王路易十六被捕。一七九二年十二月，著名律師克雷蒂克．德馬勒澤布眼看國王面臨革命議會審訊，決定復出，要為國王效力。
路易十六中心感激，接受了德馬勒澤布的協助，說：「你不可能挽救我的性命，反而連自己的性命都可能賠上，所以更加難得。」
路易十六說得對。他一七九三年一月被押上斷頭台處死。十二月，德馬勒澤布和女兒、女婿、外孫一起被捕；次年四月，德馬勒澤布也死在斷頭台上，死前還得看着至愛的人由於受他株連，一一在他面前被處死。
