Onthescaffold,thetwenty-year-oldHaleisreportedtohavedeclared,"IonlyregretthatIhavebutonelifetoloseformycountry."
ThoughHalewasallowedtowritelettersontheeveofhisexecution,theyweredestroyedbyhisjailer,whofeltthat"rebelsshouldneverknowtheyhadamanwhocoulddiewithsomuchfirmness."
內森．黑爾是美國獨立戰爭中的愛國者，一七七六年九月自告奮勇，要到紐約英軍陣營之後刺探情況。他扮作荷蘭籍教師出發，卻遭出賣，被捕後第二天即處以絞刑。
據說，二十歲的黑爾在絞刑台上聲明：「我只懊悔自己沒有多一條性命為國犧牲。」
行刑前夕，黑爾獲准寫了些信，但都被獄卒毀掉。那獄卒認為「絕對不可教叛亂分子知道，他們有人能夠視死如歸」。
