"Butthisisnotabloodhound,"saidthelady.
"Well,wecan'ttellwhatitwillgrowintoifweleaveitbehind,"saidthesoldierashewentoffwithit.
美國內戰期間，北軍士兵奉命，在南方碰到大獵犬，須一律格殺：南方人養這些獵犬，用來追蹤逃走後躲在附近沼澤區的奴隸。
有一次，一名北軍士兵抱起一隻深得女主人疼愛的貴賓狗，準備拿去補充軍餉。那女主人哀求他高抬貴手，他回答說：「軍方有命，見到大獵犬，格殺勿論。」
女主人說：「但這隻不是大獵犬。」
士兵一邊抱着狗離去，一邊說：「嗯，這隻狗假如留下來，誰知道長大後會變成什麼。」
〔附注〕Meetwith可以有兩個意思，一是「偶然遇到」，等於comeacross；一是「約好會面」，等於haveameetingwith，例如：（1）Imetwithachildhoodfriendinthestreet（我在街上碰到一個兒時的朋友）。（2）ChiangKai-shekmetwithGandhiin1942（一九四二年，蔣介石和甘地會面）。
