"TheChineseattemptedtoconvertprisonerstocommunism.NotoneAustralianfellforthisstuff.WewerethefirstAustraliansinanywartostanduptobrainwashing."
"Wetriedtoescape,butwereeventuallycaught.Theyputusinalittlecell.Wehadtostandatattention,orsitwithourlegsoutstretched,from4:30amtill11:00pm.Sometimestheybeatuswiththeirriflebuttsuntilwewereunconscious.Wewerestarved,couldonlygotothelavatoryonceaday,andeventhentheguardsdecidedthetime,whichwasbadbecauseweallhaddysentery."
韓戰期間，中國、北韓軍隊俘虜的聯合國士兵囚禁環境非常惡劣，不符合一九四九年日內瓦公約。澳洲士兵莫．格威瑟記述了被俘的日子：
「中國想要戰俘信奉共產主義，澳洲人沒有一個被那套鬼話迷惑。我們是歷來戰爭中第一批挨洗腦的澳洲人。
「我們試過逃走，最後被抓回，關在斗室裏，要立正站着，或伸直雙腿坐下，由凌晨四點三十分到晚上十一點。他們有時還用來福槍柄打我們，打到不省人事才罷手。我們食不果腹，每天只能上廁所一次，時間更由守衞決定。這很要命，因為我們都患痢疾。」
