英文常用「最高級形容詞（superlativeadjective）+of+複數名詞」，說「十分……的人或事物」，例如：（1）Attheworstoftimes,heearnslessthan$4000amonth（最不好景的時候，他每月賺不到四千元）。（2）Thetoadisprobablynotthemostbeautifulofcreatures（癩蛤蟆大概不能算是什麼美麗的動物）。（3）Children'sinnocentsmilescansoftenthehardestofhearts（小孩子的純真笑容，可令最硬的心腸都軟下來）。
至於thoughoneofthemostinflexibleandchoosyofmen這子句，文法絕對沒有錯。Though或although帶出的子句，其主詞（subject）假如和主要子句（mainclause）的主詞相同，而其動詞是be或is、was等be的變體，則though子句的主詞和be、is等可以略去。例如：（1）Thoughnotconvinced（=ThoughIwasnotconvinced）,Ifollowedhisinstructions（我雖然不大相信，還是照着他的指示去做）。（2）Thoughaslipofagirl（=Thoughsheisaslipofagirl）,sheisverystrong-willed（她雖然是個瘦弱女孩，意志卻很堅強）。讀者說的那一句，等於Althoughhewasoneofthemostinflexibleandchoosyofmen,ProfessorStrunkwasquicktoacknowledgethefallacyofinflexibility。
