"Bywhatauthority?"thecommanderasked.
"InthenameofthegreatJehovah,"Allenreplied,"andtheContinentalCongress."
Thecommander'ssurrendermarkedthefirstAmericanvictoryintheRevolutionaryWar.
美國獨立戰爭期間，愛國志士伊桑．艾倫任青山軍司令。一七七五年五月十日早上，他率領手下突襲泰孔德羅加英國駐軍，走到英軍司令營房前，高聲要他走出來，否則全體駐軍要馬上就戮。那英軍司令走出營房，雙手還提着褲子。艾倫命令他馬上投降。
那英軍司令問：「你憑的是什麼？」
艾倫回答：「憑耶和華偉大的名義，以及大陸國會的名義。」
那司令投降了。美軍在獨立戰爭中贏得第一場勝利。
【附注】大陸國會是美國獨立戰爭期間的臨時政府。Forthwith即「馬上」，這個字今天已不多用，一般會用immediately或withoutdelay，例如：Pleasegivemeyourreplyforthwith/immediately（請馬上回答我）。
