Exception（例外）和rule（常規）是反義詞，例如：Theyear-endbonuswasanexception,notarule（那次年尾分紅，是例外而不是常規）。Theexceptionprovestherule也作Exceptionsprovetherule，直譯是「例外可以證明常規」，語意似乎有點矛盾，但實際意思是「事情有例外，正好證明有常規」。今天，這成語常用來說不符常規的事，例如：（1）Mammalsseldomlayeggs,buttheplatypusisanexceptionthatprovestherule（哺乳動物產卵的很少，鴨嘴獸恰好證明凡事都有例外）。（2）Hehasdonehishomeworkthistime,butitisjustacaseoftheexceptionprovingtherule（他這一趟做了家庭作業，但通常他是不做的）。
