SirFrancisDrake'smostfamousexploit."thesingeingoftheKingofSpain'sbeard"in1587,bywhichheburned30shipsinCadzharbourwheretheywerefittingoutfortheinvasionofEngland,wascarriedoutdespiteQueenElizabeth'swishtoreachanegotiatedsettlementwithSpain.
ItwaswithgreatreluctancethatElizabethgavetheorderallowingDraketosetoff.Andnosoonerhadshegiventheorderthanshehadsecondthoughts,andanotherdispatchorderwassentracingofftocountermandit.Drakehoweverhadguessedthatsuchasecondordermightbeforthcoming,andassoonashereceivedthefirstheputtosea.Aspeedyboatwassentafterhim,butcuriouslyenoughitfailedtolocatehisfleet.Thequeenwasveryangry,buttherewasnothingshecoulddotostophim.
法郎西斯．杜蕾克爵士最膾炙人口的功業，是一五八七年「燒焦西班牙國王的鬍子」，把加的斯港內三十艘裝備好了就將進犯英國的戰船燒掉。此舉不符合伊麗莎白女王和西班牙講和的願望。
伊麗莎白下令容許杜蕾克出動，本來就十分勉強，而她命令才頒，就回心轉意，派另一快馬前去收回成命，不過，杜蕾克早就料到可能有這樣的第二道命令，所以，接到第一道，馬上出發。當局遣快艇追趕，但奇怪得很，那快艇找不到杜蕾克的船隊。伊麗莎白十分生氣，但已無法阻止杜蕾克。
【附注】一五八八年，英國大敗西班牙無敵艦隊（theInvincibleArmada），杜蕾克也有參戰，功勞不少。
