WhennewswasbroughttoLouisoftheFrencharmy'sbrutaldefeat,hecried,"HowcouldGoddothistome,afterallthatIhavedoneforhim!"
一七○一年，英國、荷蘭共和國、神聖羅馬帝國、薩伏伊公國組成大聯盟，旨在遏止路易十四治下法國擴張的野心。一七○四年，路易十四要攻佔神聖羅馬帝國首都維也納，一心迫使這帝國退出聯盟，但他的軍隊被英國、薩伏伊聯軍截擊；布萊尼姆一役，法軍敗北，法國的歐洲霸權從此結束。
路易十四接到法軍慘敗的消息，高聲叫道：「我不負上帝，上帝怎麼卻負我？」
