In1518,HernandoCortesaskedtheSpanishgovernorofCubatosponsoranexpeditiontoMexico.Thegovernor,eagertocaptureMexico'svasttreasures,quicklyembracedtheschemeandgaveCorteselevenshipsand700men.
Inthespringof1519,aftermonthsoftravel,CorteslandedinVeraCruz.AssoonastheshipshadbeenunloadedCortestorchedtheentirefleettopreventhismenfromturningback.
ThoughCortesplayedavitalroleintheSpanishconquestofMexicoandwasmadeamarquis,CharlesⅤofSpainrefusedtomakehimgovernorofMexico.CorteslaterreturnedtoSpain,where,neglectedbythecourt,hediedinpovertyin1547.
一五一八年，埃爾南多．柯狄茲要求西班牙古巴總督助他遠征墨西哥。古巴總督覬覦墨西哥豐富的財寶，馬上接納柯狄茲的計劃，給他十一艘船和七百隨從。
一五一九年春天，經過幾個月旅程，柯狄茲在韋拉克魯斯登陸，卸下船上輜重後，把十一艘船盡付一炬，以免手下萌退意。
西班牙征服墨西哥，柯狄茲功勞至大，獲封為侯爵。不過，西班牙國王查理五世拒絕委任他做墨西哥總督。柯狄茲後來回到西班牙，不獲朝廷重視，一五四七年在貧困中死去。
【附注】公元前二○七年，我國西楚霸王已經破釜沉舟，比柯狄茲早了一千七百多年。
