"Horrible,sire,"anaidereplied.
Napoleondisagreed."Remember,gentlemen,"hedeclared,"asaRomanemperoronceremarked,'Thecorpseofanenemyalwayssmellssweet!'"
一八一二年，拿破崙軍隊進犯斯摩棱斯克，俄國人焚城而退。拿破崙和幾個副官一起觀火，說眼前火海好比維蘇威火山爆發，並以讚歎口氣問這景象是不是很好看。
一個副官回答：「陛下，這景象很可怕。」
拿破崙不以為然，說：「各位，請記着，正如一位羅馬皇帝所說，『敵人的屍體總是香的』。」
【附注】俄國以焦土政策對付拿破崙，法國大軍深入俄境，得不到補給，最後潰退，死者無數，拿破崙帝國從此衰落。斯摩棱斯克那片火海其實顯示了法軍慘敗的命運，只是拿破崙看不見，他的副官卻似乎看見了。維蘇威火山位在義大利南部，公元七十九年那次爆發，岩漿埋沒了龐貝（Pompeii）、赫庫蘭尼姆（Herculaneum）兩座古城。
Inferno是「地獄」，形容詞是infernal，兩字常用於比喻，例如：（1）Chernobylbecameaninfernoafterthenuclearplantdisasterin1986（切爾諾貝利經一九八六年核電廠一劫，變成人間地獄）。（2）PoliticalprisonersinmainlandChinaareoftensubjectedtoinfernaltorture（中國大陸的政治犯常遭受慘毒酷刑）。
