俄國詩人孔德拉委．雷列耶夫是一八二五年十二月起義的領袖之一，事敗後被判處絞刑，但絞首索出奇的斷了。這是「神明介入」的迹象，受刑人一般會獲特赦。不過，雷列耶夫隨即出言不遜，行刑者於是派人到冬宮向沙皇尼古拉請示。
尼古拉問：「雷列耶夫說什麼？」
那使者回答：「陛下，他說俄國連一條繩索都做不好。」
尼古拉說：「那麼，我們應該證明他說的並非事實。」
【附注】十二月起義黨人（Decembrists）都是俄國退役軍官，雷列耶夫也曾參軍。這些軍人受到法國大革命的自由主義影響，主張君主立憲，策動軍隊背叛專制的沙皇，最後失敗，為首五人處死，其他黨人或入獄，或流放西伯利亞。
