Inoneindustriousbattlein1495,thesemastiffsleapeduponanddisembowelledmorethanahundredIndiansapiece.Thisfigurewasreportedbyanobserverofthefight,BartolomedelasCasas,who,realisingthatitwasdifficulttocredit,wentontoexplainthatthedogswereusedtodisembowellingdeerandboars,andsofoundthesoftandhairlessskinofIndiansquiteeasytobiteinto.

【附注】Thedogswereusedtodisembowellingdeer和Thedogswereusedtodisemboweldeer不同：第一句的usedto指「習慣了」，used是形容詞，to是介系詞（preposition），所以其後用動名詞（gerund）disembowelling；第二句的used是被動語態動詞（passivevoice），其後用to帶出原形動詞（infinitive）disembowel，全句意思是「那些狗是用來挖出鹿內臟的」。
