Thetwogreatgeneralsshookhands.Grantsaid,"Imetyouoncebefore,GeneralLee,whilewewereservinginMexico.Ihavealwaysrememberedyourappearance.IthinkIwouldhaverecognizedyouanywhere.""Yes,IknowImetyouthen,"Leereplied."AndIhaveoftentriedtorememberhowyoulooked.ButIhaveneverbeenabletorememberasinglefeature."
一八六五年，美國南軍將領羅勃特．李和北軍將領攸里西斯．格蘭特會面商談投降條件，結束了南北戰爭。格蘭特衣着很樸素，和最低級士兵無二，只是肩上有北軍最高將領的三顆金星。李則衣着光鮮，漂亮的灰色上衣束一條紅腰帶，身佩象牙銀劍。
這兩位名將先握手。格蘭特說：「李將軍，我見過你一次，當時是在墨西哥服役。我一直記得你的樣子，無論在哪裏都會認得你。」李回答說：「不錯，我知道當時見過你，想回憶你的容貌，卻總是記不起來。」
【附注】這故事可和《隋唐嘉話》卷中一段文字並讀：「許敬宗性輕傲，見人多忘之。或謂其不聰，曰：『卿自難記。若遇何（遜）、劉（孝綽）、沈（約）、謝（朓），暗中摸索著，亦可識。』」
