UniongeneralPhilipSheridan,comingbackfromaconferenceinWashington,waswateringhishorseatasmallstreamnearWinchester,sometwentymilesawayfromCedarCreek,whenheheardthatabattlewasinprogress.Withoutwaitingformoreinformation,hegotonhishorseandspedawayinthedirectionofthebattle.Hepickedupfleeingsoldiersalongthewayandarrivedonthebattlefieldintimetorallythetroops.Intheend,theConfederacysufferedacrushingdefeat.
一八六四年十月十九日，美國南軍將領厄爾利在錫達克里克突襲北軍，北軍潰敗，指揮官萊特將軍也受了傷。
北軍將領菲力浦．雪利敦到華盛頓開會之後，當時正返回前線，途經文契斯特市附近一條小溪，離錫達克里克約二十英里，就停下來給坐騎喝水，聽到交兵消息，也不再等候詳情，連忙上馬，向戰場疾馳而去，一路集合敗走的士兵，及時趕到戰場，重整旗鼓，最後大敗南軍。
