Soonthenextbattlecame-anattackbykingBucarofMoroccoonthecityofValencia,whichElCidhadtakenfromtheMoors.TheSpanishwereonthevergeofdefeatwhenthecorpseofElCid,mountedonhishorse,appearedonthebattlefield.Heartened,theSpanishtroopsrallied,andwerevictorious.
西班牙軍人埃爾．西德（一○四○年？─一○九九年）是基督教戰士，和信奉回教的摩爾人對抗：當時摩爾人統治西班牙中部及南部大部分地區。一○九九年，他在戰爭中受傷，死前要求把遺體防腐，待下一次戰爭，放在他那匹叫巴別卡的馬上。
不久，下一場戰爭來了，摩洛哥國王布卡起兵，攻打埃爾．西德當年從摩爾人手上奪得的瓦倫西亞市。西班牙人眼看就要戰敗，埃爾．西德的遺體騎着馬來到戰場上，西班牙軍隊士氣大振，奮勇打敗了敵人。
