WhilewaitingforatransfertoafacilityinConnecticut,LowellspentseveraldaysinNewYork'sWestStreetJail,wherehewashousedinacelladjacenttoLouisLepke,anotoriousmurderer.
"I'minforkilling,"Lepketoldthepoetoneday."Whatareyouinfor?"
"Oh,"Lowellreplied,"I'minforrefusingtokill."
一九六○年代，美國詩人羅勃特．洛厄爾服膺和平主義，拒絕為國家到越南服役，被判入獄五個月。
等待轉往康乃狄克州監獄期間，洛厄爾在紐約西街監獄過了幾天。他的囚房就在惡名昭彰的謀殺犯路易．萊普克鄰近。
有一天，萊普克對洛厄爾說：「我入獄，是因為殺了人；你入獄是為了什麼？」
洛厄爾回答說：「是因為我不肯殺人。」

「監獄」叫prison或jail都可以，而以prison較為常用。Jail英式英文也作gaol，讀作gaol，和jail無別。「獄卒」從前叫jailor或gaoler，現在一般叫prisonofficer。
