我寫的會議紀錄有以下一句：Beckyreportedthattheprojectwillbestartedattheendofthisyear（蓓琪報告說，該計劃將於年底展開）。上司把willbestarted改為wouldcommence，為什麼不用被動語態（passivevoice）？Commence這個字是不是太拘謹了？
Start、commence都是「開始」的意思，但start的語氣較為隨便。會議紀錄是嚴肅文件，用嚴肅一點的文字，並不算過分拘謹。又會議紀錄即使是說現在或未來的事，動詞都應用過去式，will改為would是正確的。其實attheendofthisyear最好也改為attheendoftheyear：會議紀錄的轉述句（reportedspeech）不應照用直述句（directspeech）的thisyear（今年）、tomorrow（明天）等說法。
至於commence不用被動語態，絕對沒有不當。Start、commence、begin（開始）、stop（停止）、open（開）、close（關）等許多英文動詞，既可作及物動詞（transitiveverb，其後須有受詞），也可作不及物動詞（intransitiveverb，其後不可有受詞）。不及物動詞不可用被動語態。請比較以下四句：（1）Thewarstartedin1939（戰爭一九三九年爆發）。（2）Hitlerstartedthewar/ThewarwasstartedbyHitler（戰爭是希特勒發動的）。（3）Theirworkstopped（他們的工作停止了）。（4）Badweatherstoppedtheirwork/Theirworkwasstoppedbybadweather（惡劣天氣使他們停止工作）。第一、三兩句，不可用被動語態改寫。同樣，Theprojectwouldstart不可改為Theprojectwouldbestarted，正如「該計劃將會展開」不可改為「被展開」。
