DuringtheUSCivilWar,theadventofwintersawaninformalarmisticebetweentheFederalandConfederatearmies.Thepicketsonbothsideshadbecomefriendly,moregiventotradingthanshootingoneanotheratlessthan100yards.Oneafternoon,aFederalbandcamealongandbeganplayingtheNorthernpatrioticwarsongs.
"Nowgiveussomeofours!"shoutedaConfederatepicket.Atoncethemusicswelledinto"Dixie","MyMaryland"andthe"BonnieBlueflag".Then,afteramightycheer,andaslightpause,thebandbeganagain.
Thistimeitwasthetender,meltingbarsof"Home,SweetHome".Onbothsidestherewerejoyousshouts,andsoonmanyweteyescouldbefoundamongthosehardywarriorsunderthetwoflags.
美國內戰期間，冬季來臨，南北兩軍非正式休戰。雙方哨兵建立了友誼，往往會交換些物品，而不是向一百碼之內的另一方開槍。一天下午，北軍一支樂隊走來，演奏北方愛國軍樂。
一個南軍哨兵喊道：「奏些南方軍樂給我們聽吧！」《狄克西》、《我的馬里蘭州》、《美麗的藍旗》等樂曲馬上雄赳赳響起來。隨後是一陣熱烈的喝采聲。樂隊稍停一下，又開始演奏。
這次演奏柔和感人的《家，可愛的家》。雙方軍隊都發出歡呼聲。不久，南北軍旗下那些剛強戰士很多都熱淚盈眶。
