第一次世界大戰時，美國作家歐文．科布任職記者，派往比利時採訪德軍入侵情況。有一天，他和幾個同事搭的士去比利時軍方總部，路上遭德軍俘虜，拘留問話。
審問經過一晚，到第二天還未停止，科布顯得很憂慮，終於對俘虜他們的軍官說：「軍官，無論你是不是要槍斃我們，至少答應我們一個請求好嗎？」
那軍官問：「你們有什麼請求？」
科布回答：「可不可以叫我們那個的士司機把收費計停下來？」
【附注】Taxi和tax（稅）同樣出自拉丁文taxare一字，都有「徵收費用」含義，所以的士的收費計叫taximeter。的士的全名是taximetercab，現在一般略作taxicab、taxi或cab。
