AtthebattleofStDenisin1567,hewasknockedfromhishorsebyaScottishadventurernamedRobertStuart,whocalledonhimtosurrender.MontmorencyrespondedbyhittingStuartinthefacewithhisswordhilt,knockingoutthreeoftheScotsman'sfrontteeth.Temporarilyallowinghisangertoovercomehisgreedforransom,StuartpulledouthispistolandshotMontmorencyinthechest,killinghiminstantly.
十六世紀法國和西班牙戰爭期間，昂．德．蒙莫朗西是法國最顯赫的將領之一。他的戰術着重身先士卒率領騎兵衝鋒，結果不止一次被敵軍俘虜，部下失去領袖，成為一盤散沙。就是到了七十四歲，他似乎還未學會這個年紀應有的謹慎。
一五六七年聖丹尼斯之役，他被蘇格蘭籍雇傭兵羅勃特．斯圖亞特打下馬來。斯圖亞特叫他投降，他的答覆就是用劍柄向斯圖亞特臉上撞去，撞脫了三顆門牙。斯圖亞特雖然貪得贖金，卻一時忍不住怒氣，拔出手槍，對着蒙莫朗西胸膛，一槍取了他性命。
