英國鄉紳約翰．皮爾德和義大利著名愛國者朱塞佩．加里波底初次相逢，是在戰場上。兩人在介紹認識時，奧地利軍隊陣營有些異動，引起皮爾德注意。他說：「對不起，但我覺得那邊有個混帳的奧地利人很礙眼。」
他漫不經意舉起來福槍，開槍一響。加里波底的隨從都拿起望遠鏡看那奧地利人，只見他蹣跚踏出幾步，就仆倒地上。
皮爾德滿意的點點頭，向加里波底伸出手說：「將軍，你好嗎？」
【附注】十八世紀初，義大利並未統一，疆土不少更被奧地利佔領。一八六○年，加里波底率領義軍把奧地利人逐出西西里島和南義大利，成為統一國家的功臣。
